A traveller based in Craigmillar has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years after he admitted causing unnecessary suffering to two game-breed cockerels.
Paul Stewart, 42, of Northcairntow, Duddingston Road West, was convicted at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, February 2 following a Scottish SPCA investigation.
Acting on an allegation that birds were being kept in poor conditions, the Scottish SPCA's special investigations unit had conducted a search at Stewart's property and found two cockerels both suffering from severe lice infestations causing extensive feather loss.
The birds were both of game-breed and one large cockerel had his natural heel spurs removed while the smaller bird had his natural comb removed.
Stewart, who pled guilty to two charges of causing an animal unnecessary suffering by failing to provide veterinary treatment, was also given 12 months probation and 100 hours community service.
Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: "We welcome this conviction which should send a strong message to anyone who thinks it's acceptable to cause an animal unnecessary suffering.
