Greater Craigmillar is a suburb on the south-east of Edinburgh incorporating several areas including Craigmillar, Niddrie, Bingham, and Newcraighall. It is bounded by Holyrood Park, the historic Craigmillar Castle and the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and is currently undergoing massive regeneration. The area has a strong history of community activism and has been home to the Craigmillar Festival for more than 40 years. Once the site of industries including brewing and mining, Craigmillar has been characterised by social deprivation but is home to a fiercely proud community, and s1craigmillar.com has been developed to allow residents share their news, views and opinions, make announcements, publicise events and show off their photos and videos.

19/6/2008Lismore up for closure again?

Despite being saved from the axe less than four years ago, a city education review means Lismore Primary could close as early as Christmas.

The school's 80-plus pupils are likely to be offered places at either Niddrie Mill or Brunstane.

Plans to shut Bingham's primary school last surfaced in 2004, when the council revealed it was considering the future of several under-occupied city schools to help trim £2.1m off its education budget.

The motion was defeated after months of campaigning by Lismore parents and the shock last minute abstention of three members of the council's ruling group.

At that point, Lismore's future was guaranteed until at least 2007, but with the council again looking to make savings, Lismore is one of three Edinburgh schools targeted for closure, along with Bonnington, and Westburn Primaries. A six-week public consultation process starts on August 25.

What would happen if Lismore closes? What about Bingham Community Centre? Can Lismore Primary be saved again?

Lismore Parent Action Group (LPAG) are fighting this, unfortunately only they know what they are doing. Infomation from them is minimal. So come on LPAG if you want our support let us know what is happening and how the whole of the community can help. These closures affect us all not just those with pupils at the school.
