Online petition launched to save Craigmillar's Niddrie Mill primary

  • An online petition to save Niddrie Mill Primary has been launched

Local campaigners have set up an online petition as part of their fight to save Niddrie Mill Primary, the local Victorian school which is facing demolition.

The online campaign has been set up by Terry Tweed for Craigmillar Community Council, and the petition is appealing for people to support the retention of the former Niddrie Mill Primary, which residents describe as a "local gem".

The school is understood to be the last remaining building built out of Niddrie brick.

It's always good to keep some period buildings in any area. It helps keep a diversity. We shouldn't be so keen to eradicate the past so completely!

Passing within mere inches of the boarded up school in recent months [on a walking tour] & surely one could argue the point this memorial monument to these war veterans - nay heroes - their very deaths alone is enough. But oh no - one click from the invisible visages and moneyed fingers - aka the men in dark suits - who decide heritage's fate and destiny - aka a wrecking ball cum bulldozer and thereby gone is another slice of history.

The place evokes strong and satisfying memories of hand carried bells and jam pieces for our playtime hours in the playground, skipping, bulldog and 'your it' and not least marbles - so bypass the apparent 'necessity' of desecration.Leave well alone.
