Greater Craigmillar is a suburb on the south-east of Edinburgh incorporating several areas including Craigmillar, Niddrie, Bingham, and Newcraighall. It is bounded by Holyrood Park, the historic Craigmillar Castle and the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and is currently undergoing massive regeneration. The area has a strong history of community activism and has been home to the Craigmillar Festival for more than 40 years. Once the site of industries including brewing and mining, Craigmillar has been characterised by social deprivation but is home to a fiercely proud community, and s1craigmillar.com has been developed to allow residents share their news, views and opinions, make announcements, publicise events and show off their photos and videos.

17/7/2008Niddrie Mill public meeting

Under PARC's plans Niddrie Mill's Victorian main building would become flats.

PARC is preparing a planning application for the Niddrie Mill Primary School site on Niddrie Mains Road, proposing that the Victorian built school be turned into flats.

Under the plans, the building's more recent extensions will be also demolished to make way for a mixture of townhouses and blocks of three and four story flats, making 55 new homes in all, 10 of which will be available to rent.

To find out what local people think, PARC have organised a public meeting on Thursday July 24, at the Hays Business Centre from 7pm-9pm, where the proposals can be discussed in more depth.

For further details, call Pete Gregson at City of Edinburgh Council on 0131 529 2274.

I attended this school from about 1940 to 1952 - it would be a disaster to convert such a fine building into flats. If it can't continue as a school, could it not be converted into a local museum for the Craigmillar area?

I have been trying for some time, I suggested erecting General Whaucope monument in the campus of the new school. The children would know the history of what their area is all about.

Can some one tell me why we need yet another super store when we have an Asda Sava centre and 2 Morrisons stores that surround the Craigmillar area? Would the money that will be put into the building of this ridiculous new store not be better used for a better purpose? I dread to think of what amount of traffic this will cause. Will this have any impact on the health of the children and the residents of the Craigmillar area due to the increase of the car fumes? What about the local shops that have served the area for a number of years, will they just go out of business? Does anyone care?
Asda, Savacenter and the Morrison shops are all a car ride or bus ride (or2) from the heart of the Craigmillar area, we need shops/supermarkets that meet the needs of residents. I for one would like to be able to shop without having to take buses. The local shops are OK but do not meet the need of the present or future residents of the area, certainly nowhere near the type of food shopping that I want to do. Can we actually get more traffic going along the main road?
