Niddrie Marischal Secondary School

by George Jardine

I used to live in a tenement at 5 Hay Avenue (now demolished I believe) and attended Niddrie Marischal Secondary School,

I'm doing my life's history to pass on to my daughters and would like to find a photo of the school.
I attended there in 1948/50 and would love to include a photograph in my story.
If anyone could direct me to a website or even has a photograph to upload, I would be most grateful.

Regards to all,

George Jardine

I too attended Niddrie Marischal, I also lived at 2 Hay Avenue, and yes, it has all been demolished, now new tenements and houses, quit sad really, anyway if you try Friends Reunited I beleive there is a photo of the old school on there. from Nessie (Agnes) Robertson

Thanks for all your replies, regretably, I still can't find a picture of Niddrie Mariscal School. George Jardine

I have since found out that the old school is a listed building, and is now the Castlebrae Business Centre. If you get on to www.communiversity.org.uk you will find a picture there. Brought back some happy memories on seeing it. from Nessie Robertson. I do remember your family from No. 5

George Jardine says

Many thanks to Nessie Robertson; I found the picture of the old school and it will help to complete my memories to relate to my daughters. It's lovely that you remember our family at number 5 and I wondered if you remember me or my brother and sisters?

Also I was trying to remember the shop names; I can remember Rennies, Somervilles, McNallys, but there was a chemist and I believe a drapers, whose name I can't recall. Any ideas?

Thanks again,
George Jardine

Could I be addressing the same George Jardine who just happened to be a real wizz kid on the Euphonium? If it is, I wasn't that far away from you as I stayed at 6 Hay Drive. Oh happy memories. I couldn't find a good photo of the school either.
Kindest regards.
Laurie (Lawrence ) Graham

Nessie Robertson says

The name of the drapers was Parkes, the lady was Miss Parkes, don't remember the name of the chemist, there was a butchers, I think it was Gilhooleys or something like that. I think you may have gone to school with my sister Laura Cockburn and I can't remember your brothers or sisters names but I went to Niddrie Marischal 1955 to 1959 I have lived in London since 1961. My other two sisters went to Niddrie Marischal.
Regards
Nessie Robertson.

To Laurie Graham - Thanks for your note - yes I am the Euphonium player you remember and I carried on playing, conducting and writing music up 'till two years ago! How on earth do you remember that.....? I remember Hay Drive as I used to pass that way to the old Niddrie Mill Primary School, which I understand will soon be converted into flats - I wonder what my old teacher Miss Burgess would think of that!
Good luck to all.
George Jardine

laurie graham says

I remember Miss Burgess too as I was in the same class as you. You may recall in those days there was Lawrence Leslie who played the cornet and I dabbled with the tenor horn but I always had the feeling that you would excel in music.
Was Robert the name of the bandmaster?
Good luck to you George and to yours.

George Jardine says

Thank you Laurie - I certainly do remember Lawrence Leslie. It was he who introduced me to the SA and who later became goalkeeper for Hibs, West Ham and Scotland! He used to live above me at 5 Hay Avenue and we were good pals in those days. The Bandmaster was indeed Robert Runciman, who took the YP Band and I with Lawrence, Ian MacDonald and Charlie Teale used to go cycling around the Scottish Youth Hostels.
Did you carry on playing Tenor Horn or any other instrument?
It's lovely to recount those times.
Kind regards to you and yours,
George Jardine

laurie graham says

Yes I still like my music and my grandson did become a member of our local band, he was playing cornet but you know the modern kids he left as it interfered with his bike trials. Priorities I suppose. I quite often sit and play my accordion but I can only play from music and not by ear I can't explain why.
In the back of my mind I seem to recall that your father invented an alarm of some sort, is this correct or am I just havering. Regards anyway.
PS. Robert took some of us on holiday in Perthshire and that was our very first time away from home, and on reflection what a happy childhood we had in Niddrie.

Nessie Robertson says

I too remember Lawrie Leslie, his wee sister was in my class at Niddrie Mill. We were both picked for the 1955 Gala, I was gala queen and she was the princess. Mary Laird who lived at No.6 Hay Avenue was my best friend. You George lived opposite her.

I would be grateful if anyone has any pics of Hay Drive from 1948-1960. My name is Johnny Nicholson, we lived at number 9 Hay Drive. Thanks. snizort@hotmail.com

To Laurie Graham
Good to know of your interest in music, it may take a little persuasion to keep your grandson interested. I think you must be the original memory man because my Dad did make such an invention and he fitted it to all the doors at Parkers Stores (Surgeons Hall or Nicholson Square) so you're definitely not havering Laurie.
Your trip to Perth, was that the Youth Hostel as I do remember going there as well as many others around Scotland.
Tell me, do you remember Charlie Teale who was in our group playing Baritone. He used to live on the road running through the middle of the area - was that Niddrie Mains Drive?
Kind regards

To Nessie Robertson
Laurie Leslie did have a wee sister I think called Elizabeth and his big sister was Nancy. I remember the Laird family right enough but I can't place Mary.
You both must have looked stunning!

laurie graham says

Sorry for the late reply but here goes, I can't recall a Charlie Teale and I still get confused with the SA players and the school band (do you remember the school band although I don't know if you joined) we all seemed to enjoy it.
Taken to Perthshire with Robert and co. surely must have been in a SYH, but when I became really rich and bought my first bike from the CO-OP on HP and I ventured down as far as Peebles and stayed at the Barns Hostel and a great time was had by all.
You know on reflection these jaunts we did were so enjoyable and they cost hardly anything.
Best Regards,
Laurie Graham

I have just come across this web site and it has brought back a lot of good memories.

I went to Niddrie Marischal Secondary between 1961 and 64.

Some of the pupils who come to mind are John Cameron, Andrew Jesseman, Dennis Morgan, Rose Hamilton, Margaret Young, Billy Mcartney, Rab Buchan, Harry Mcintyre.

Teachers were Charlie Gray, Mr Scott, Mr Fergusson, Miss Bracegirdle, and Doc Gray.

The class I was in was 1TC,2TC & 3TC.

If anybody out there knows the wherabouts of any of these pupils or any others in the same year please let me know.

Regards
Gus

Looking to find the whereabouts of a oil painting by my father in Law Tom Buchanan who attended Niddrie Marschial approx from 1948 I think.

It was of General Custer and attracted alot of interest from the principal of Art at the time and Tom was encouraged to attended Edin College of Art but couldn't get funding.

Tom is very unwell at the moment and through his brother Billy we have heard about this painting. If anyone has any contacts who might know what happened to this it we would be very obliged.

Last known whereabouts was on the wall of the old school.
