Greater Craigmillar is a suburb on the south-east of Edinburgh incorporating several areas including Craigmillar, Niddrie, Bingham, and Newcraighall. It is bounded by Holyrood Park, the historic Craigmillar Castle and the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and is currently undergoing massive regeneration. The area has a strong history of community activism and has been home to the Craigmillar Festival for more than 40 years. Once the site of industries including brewing and mining, Craigmillar has been characterised by social deprivation but is home to a fiercely proud community, and s1craigmillar.com has been developed to allow residents share their news, views and opinions, make announcements, publicise events and show off their photos and videos.

4/6/2008New names for new streets

With building for the next phase of the regeneration at Wauchope and Greendykes getting underway, the council are turning their attention to what Craigmillar's newest streets will be called.

Among the list of names discussed at the public meeting in May meeting were several that are traditionally linked with the area, like Wauchope and Harewood - along with suggestions inspired by former councillor and Lord Provost Jack Kane, Newcraighall born Hearts legend Willie Bauld, and community arts activist Faye Milligan.

There were also numerous options discussed paying tribute to Craigmillar's mining history. Particularly popular was the name Moffat, after two sisters who worked down the mines for the Wauchope family; their Parliamentary testimony helped outlaw child labour in mines in the 1840s.

With guidelines in place to ensure that new street names have not only some kind of link to the locale, as well as much variety as possible, at least 20 new names are going to be needed. From the looks of it, there will be no shortage of options.

Are there any names you would like to see used for the new streets at Wauchope Square and The Courtyards in Greendykes? Post your suggestions here.

Harry Trowell was a popular local resident who for many years edited the local community newspaper, as well as also being involved on many committees throughout the community. he was also an extremely talented artist.

There has been a group of pensioners who meet every Tuesday at Sandies, Niddrie Farm Community Centre, for the past 30 years and it would be nice to se their Tuesday Club on a street posting?
