28/1/2010New life for Craigmillar pub to be restored to its former glory
Craigmillar's landmark White House pub, a B-listed building is set to finally reopen its doors after being allowed to fall into ruin for more than a decade.
The art deco pub is to be restored to its former glory as the latest stage of a £200 million regeneration of the neighbourhood. The pub's first use will be as a temporary exhibition space before, hopefully, reopening as a traditional pub or cafe bar.
Site developer Parc has taken over the building after starting compulsory purchase moves against the previous owners.
The renovation of the building on Niddrie Mains Road will include replacing the roof, outside rendering, windows and doors, and a complete internal revamp.
The restoration will be part funded by a £53,250 heritage grant from Historic Scotland.

When you read the Evening News article, please be aware that they have misquoted me in two respects, and that I have emailed the reporter involved to complain.
I have also emailed my response to my colleagues at CCA, and also to PARC, since I expect they will take exception to what is a misquote!
Always be careful in your dealings with the media, especially the print-media ... they have been incredibly guilty of loaded articles against the whole of Craigmillar in times past ... which has made our community something of a pariah in Edinburgh.
It's not something I will accept any longer. I want them to work WITH our community ... NOT against us!
So if you are ever asked for an interview, as to see the copy BEFORE it goes to print! I certainly intend to in future. I thought I had a good working relationship with the Evening News over the last six months ... and now I will be very careful in my dealings with them.
As for the article itself, we have been involved in negotiations with PARC for some time now regarding the White Hoose, and we don't need anyone clumsily coming in and wrecking what is a delicate procedure!
If you agree in our proposed usage of the old pub ... please write to PARC suppoting our cause. It's OUR heritage ... and OUR future!

Johnni 'Ranting' Stanton,
Guess what - your latest nightmare here - the 'Caustic' yin no less but seriously writing I left an appealing - well exceptionally endearing at least & congratulatory piece based upon Craigmillar [in verse, no less] and in my [our] opinion and guess what?
They - the guid auld Evening News decided in their flawed wisdom -failed to print same - what a sheer waste of 30 mins! Not only that, they openly and deliberately failed to acknowledge receipt of receiving my plaudit and rare comment.
Good on Mark McLaughln and his news team; stopping me having my tuppence worth. I,we, may not have lived here for more than a year plus, but surely an' ootsider's' point of view is nevertheless invaluable.
As I stated obviously no one person who added their 'caustic' comments had resided nor bided in Moorhoose, the Poorhoose! That would truly place 'Escape from New York in it's proper context - a holiday camp, in comparison!
Good on Craigmillar hoist yer own petard!
- Aye it's said 'it will take six months to dry oot the White Hoose', the parody is not lost! Let's look forward to some collaborative working.
