27/8/2008Lismore closure consultation underway
City of Edinburgh Council's public consultation into the future of Lismore Primary gets underway this week.
Bingham's Primary School is one of three under-occupied schools up for review as the council's education department tries to make savings.
Some estimates suggest that as much as £3 million could be earned from the sale of Lismore's Bingham Avenue site as well as from reduced running costs.
Four years ago, Lismore found itself in similar circumstances only to be granted an eleventh hour stay of execution after months of campaigning by parents and a shock defeat of the council's ruling group. This time round, matters are complicated by the fact that Lismore's roll has dropped drastically after a summer of uncertainty to only 48 from over 80 pupils last session.
The council stress that no decisions will be been taken until after the six-week consultation period ends on October 7. The final decision is due in November, with any closure set for the end of the Christmas term, with pupils then likely to be offered places at either Niddrie Mill or Brunstane.
Update 18/09/2008
After last night's heated gathering at Lismore about the proposed closure, the next meeting to discuss the future of the school will be held tonight at Niddrie Mill Primary School between 7pm and 9pm.
Do you agree with the opinion reported today that closing the school would turn the community into a "ghetto"?
- There are two public meetings scheduled next month. To do with the above closure:- Lismore Primary School 17/09/08 3-5pm Exhibition 7-9pm Meeting. Niddrie Mill Primary School 18/09/08 3-5pm Exhibition 7-9pm Meeting. Please come along and voice your opinions.
