Craigmillar officers commended with police merit award
16 NovemberTwo officers from Craigmillar Police Station – PC Iain McCran and PC John Andrews - have been commended for their actions in helping two men who suffered life-threatening burns in a road crash at the Lothian and Borders Police Meritorious Awards.
Awards and certificates from the Society for the Protection of Life from Fire were presented to Constable Iain McCran and Constable John Andrews at the ceremony held at Lothian and Borders Police Headquarters at Fettes.
Both officers went to the aid of two men who suffered life-threatening burns in a motorbike crash in November 2009.
Constables McCran and Andrews were on patrol in a car in Edinburgh when the motorbike in front of them was involved in a collision with a car at the junction of the Jewel and Duddingston Park South.
The motorbike immediately caught light, and exploded in a ball of flames. Both the rider and passenger were able to run off, but both of them were on fire.
Constable Andrews went after the passenger, whose arm was on fire, eventually forcing him to the ground and extinguishing the flames.
Meanwhile, Constable McCrann used his police jacket to put out the flames of the rider whose clothing was alight, and whose hair and face was badly burned.
Both men were taken to hospital and eventually recovered, but doctors concluded their injuries could have been life threatening without both constables intervention.
Their prompt actions meant both men got emergency treatment immediately.
