15/8/2008Council say local ASBO sends tough message

News has emerged this week about a youth being served with an Antisocial Behavior Order (ASBO) and banned from a 12 street area in Bingham and Magdalene.

The Sherrif Court heard at the end of July that over a two year period the youth in question was repeatedly warned about shouting, swearing, drinking, singing, fighting, threatening residents, smashing bottles, urinating and littering fast food containers, cigarettes and drug paraphernalia within common stair areas.

The council said that they were left with no choice but to issue the ASBO, and that the move sends a strong message to the community that tough action is being taken on the problem of persistent antisocial behaviour.

What are your thoughts on the issue of antisocial behaviour and how to tackle it in Craigmillar?
There are several others in the same crowd who need the same. However an ASBO is only effective if it is enforced. I've heard this individual was picked up for breaching it a week past Friday and released early the following Saturday morning. Not much of a deterrent if true.
Obviously asbo's don't include Craigmillar, I stayed in a flat in the Craigmillar area and for almost 16 months I had a family in a property above mine that was constantly banging on walls and floors through out, I was to keep a recorded incident sheet containing all the detales of what was happening and stuff, at the finish up, the council refused to take action against this family, in my opinion, the reason the council refused to take action against this family could have been that they (the family) were of ethnic origans, and had the council was to have taken action against them, they would have claimed racial abuse, I have since left Craigmillar knowing that the council have bricked themselfs from taking asbo's out against the ethnic family's that cause nuisence problems for other people.

I am studying a community course and I am doing a project on the history and present day Craigmillar area. I have a few questions and I would really appreciate it if you could take the time to answer them or indeed give me any information or issues you would like to raise.

I should really explain a bit better: I'm looking at the area in general, the changes from when this area was a thriving brewery and coal mining area, looking at the factors which made the area change into what it has become and is now becoming.

Did you live and/or work in the area at such times, what do you, the people living in this area, believe to be the positive and negatives to this community, how strong is your community, how much do you know about your neighbours? Who do you think the changes in the area benefit, who are less likely to use services provided?

Basically any information you wish to give - it will be greatly acknowledged and appreciated. I'm also looking for information on what community-based work there is in the area, from paid work to volunteering.

Hi it's Alexa again.......... For those who have contacted me through this site with your views etc Thank You, I really do appreciate it.
OK, here it is, I have to research crime and effectiveness of ASBO's. Who else has been effected either directly/indirectly by these issues, have you commited a crime? What was the outcome and who did you have to contact to report these issues to.

Have your say:
