Niddrie Mill Primary 1953-60

by Ian Thomson

Please join me in my journey back to 1953, I can still remember the relatively short journey from Niddrie Mains Terrace to the back entrance into the school, just by the bridge that went over the burn that separated Niddrie Mains from Niddrie Mill. Little did i know that I at such a young and tender age, I was to have my first 'love affair', that was with my teacher Miss Purves. I am sure that my class was the only one that kept the same teacher from 'infants through to leaving and going to secondary. Each time we were due to change teacher we asked or perhaps insisted that we kept her.

My days at NMP were the most happiest times of my childhood, there are so many happy memories. I remember in the summer months we would all go over the road to Craigmillar park to do some drawings, of course that was were Miss Purves would meet the real love of her life - her boyfriend, they would sit and cuddle by the tree, I often wonder if she is still with us........Yes Niddrie Mill Primary has a special place in my heart

Thks for your update George, however, are we talking about the same place: almost directly opposite the southern entrance to the school on NM Road (Next to the burn) was a driveway that took you to the back of Niddrie Marischal estate and also 'the woods', to us kids that was the park!

Robin,Dundas,Colin,Heather & Hazel Kerr of Cairntows and Little France farm! Robin is my Dad and Bert was my Grandad, and remembering the fun times I had there and the Castle farm. I was born on Little France Farm 1958. I remember a Craigmillar friend and Nellie and myself loading hay bales on to truck. Funest place in Craigmillar was Lucis Ice Cream shop, with the '99(a chocolate flake stuck in the ice cream and dipped in hot chocolate powder)!

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
