THE FIRST DAY OF CHRISTMAS @ THE INNOCENT RAILWAY

Could you imagine,

The first holly leaf

To delicate... heave

Itself from the safety of the bush.

Untouched.

Un-besmiched.

By sodden rain.

Forest green,

Gloss painted.

Lying slainted.

How apt.....I mean

Trapped

'tween

wind-bent grass blades.

Lying in the cold sunshades

Although it fell,

T''wasn't swell.

'Twasn't

There to tell,

The age old tale

And archaic song

To deck the halls with boughs of holly

Tra,la, la, la la,

'Twas its job.

Bah!

Did'st the others push

Or to shove?

It was too perfect

The little love.

I cradled it anew.

Home with me

Don't be blue.

You will last for all time.

While the other

Hand-made wreaths... will find

After nine

Days on the scrapheap,

Off they go.

Made for [temporary]show

But between the leaves

Of my book

You and you alone

Will be preserved for all time.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
